for string quartet (2 violins, viola, cello)
for the Orava Quartet
V is the fifth string quartet in my catalogue, and its name has been selected for this reason. To further encapsulate this detail, I found it appropriate to utilize a five-movement structure derived from the later quartets of Béla Bartók.
This work is not attached to any program or discernible external influence. With this in mind, there is a distinct progression through the piece that moves from an icy chill to a much warmer embrace.
V was written for the Orava Quartet during their residency at the University of Colorado Boulder College of Music.
