for mezzo soprano and harp
commissioned by Courtney Pomeroy
to commemorate the birth of her daughter, Amelia
This piece consists of two simple settings of text by Courtney Pomeroy. The first song is Mi Lirio (My Lily), and the second is El Fuego (The Fire). According to Courtney, her text reflects a constant battle she has experienced in her life where the identity of the women in her family has regularly been recipient of oppression and conformity.
Humorously, the commissioning fee for this work was that of a futon.
The world premiere was coincidentally a week after the birth of her daughter, Amelia, to whom the piece is dedicated.
