for woodwind quartet (flute, oboe, Bb clarinet, bassoon)
commissioned by the Paradise Winds
This is a very nostalgic work of mine, written for some of my favorite instruments and the people who play them. In their infancy, the Paradise Winds all attended school with me at Arizona State University, and were not only friends, but mentors as I worked to further my ability as a musician. Fresh out of my masters, they graciously offered my the opportunity to write for a subset of their instrumentation, which I gratefully accepted.
My love of writing for this group was best described their artistic director, Joseph Kluesener, when he said, "you are just like a kid in a candy shop, except when you don't see something you like, you know it can always become available." This speaks volumes to how I approached this piece in that whatever I wrote, they would play it. As such, I went to building a set of contrasting character pieces that took on the persona of each member playing the piece, resulting in this suite of miniatures with all of the virtuosity one could ask for.
